Introduction:
'BreakIT' - End of Life Vehicle Depopulation, Treatment, Recycling, Waste Management and Reporting Software for Authorised Treatment Facilities ( Car Dismantlers, Scrap Dealers and Automobile Breakers )
Background:
The way in which vehicles reaching the end of their useful life are processed has change. About 2 million end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) are generated each year of which an estimated 350,000 cars were illegally abandoned last year in the UK alone. These are classified as hazardous waste, and need to be depolluted, as a consequence of European legislation, prior to dismantling, crushing, or shredding. All facilities treating ELVs are affected by this legislation.
BreakIT, provides a template of data capture technology which helps assist and guide an ATF (Authorised Treatment Centre) in the following areas:
Supporting the implementation of the relevant legislation on both ELVs (the ELV Directive) and hazardous waste (the European Waste Catalogue) means that depollution operations can be conducted to meet the requirements of the legislation.
The depollution procedure is only one stage in the overall process required to treat an ELV.
Other operations, such as conducting the required administrative activities, and complying with all existing legislation relating to these activities, still need to be conducted.
BreakIT, helps to address these requirements by offering a clear computerised software driven data capture point and reporting source for an array of ELV related data.

EPA issues ATF's with 2007 request for information
EPA issues ATF's with FIRST! annual (2007) national statistical survey request for information for the 2007 period. This will then be compiled into the EPA's final submission to europe as a national report of the treatment and recycling of end-of-life vehicles in Ireland.
The MicroSoft Excel spreadsheet AFT's are requested to complete the survey which can be downloaded from: http://www.epa.ie/downloads/forms/wreport/nwr/
"The End-Of-Life Vehicles Directive and national Regulations require close monitoring of the depollution, treatment and recycling of end-of-life vehicles.
"BreakIT ... is a focused centre point solution based on Irish requirement's and the application of EU directives” ...
"A paper copy of the survey is available on request .... Please return the questionnaire for 2007 by e-mail ... or by post ... by 19 September 2008."
"If you have trouble with the survey, phone the EPA's national waste report team in Wexford ..."
"You (the ATF) have no discretion in the completion of this survey, and this is supported by national regulations."
"Please be advised that failure to submit the information requested for 2007 may result in the EPA issuing a notice under Section 18 of the Waste Management Acts 1996 to 2005. Failure to comply with a Section 18 notice may lead to prosecution."
New ‘Destruction Certification’ process:
The new version of the ‘National Vehicle Licensing System’ website ( www.motortax.ie ) appears to be on target for the launch of the new on-line ‘Destruction Certification Process’. The new on-line process is projected to allow ‘ATFs’ to process ‘Destruction Certification Notifications’ via the ‘National Vehicle Licensing System’ which could then centrally print the ‘Destruction Certificates’ in the majority of cases.
Some Vehicles may be excluded from the new on-line process where the details for the vehicle do not already exist in the ‘National Vehicle Licensing System’, these exclusions may include imported vehicles (which number nearly 90,000 for 2007 - up by 5.4% on 2006). In the later cases, the existing manual paper based system for the issuing of ‘Destruction Certificates’ would continue to run in parallel with the projected new on-line system.
BreakIT project now moves into the lime light:
Following a number of enhancements to the latest version suggested by existing users, ‘BreakIT’ is now moving into the lime light. BreakIT is the Irish based solution for End-Of-Life Vehicle Management. By way of an introductory promotion, we are happy to offer both the benefit’s of the ‘BreakIT Software’ together with the incentive of a heavy discount for ‘Early Adopters’.
The incentive is being offered in order to facilitate those on a restrictive budget who still wish to avail of the opportunity to employ the ‘BreakIT Software’ into their normal day to day operations and there by seek to reduce and ease the workload normally associated with patterns and practices of keeping good records and general document management relating to end-of-life vehicles. This incentive will be limited to ‘Early Adopters’, for a limited period only and terms and conditions maybe applied.
If you would like to enquire further about the ‘Introductory Promotion’, or receive a demonstration of the ‘BreakIT Solution’ please contact Tasc Software for further information.
Your ‘IDIS’ DVD may arrive shortly:
The new version of the ‘International Dismantling Information System’ DVD ( aka IDIS 2008 ) by the ‘IDIS2 Consortium’ ( www.idis2.com ) should arrive in the mail shortly. ‘IDIS’ is available free of charge to registered users and is dedicated to dismantlers and recyclers of end of life vehicles. ‘IDIS’ contains important (we would suggest Critical) detailed internet and pc based information (a reference library) from 58 vehicle manufacturers about dismantling end-of-life vehicles.
If you would like to order the IDIS 2008 DVD or Internet Access details, you can place an order at:
‘IDIS’ 1 day training sessions:
Would you would like to attend a 1 day 'Introduction to IDIS' training session?. This training would promote a better understanding and greater utilisation of the 'IDIS' system in the processing of End-Of-Life vehicles? Currently we have been unable to locate any existing source of training on the subject of ‘IDIS’ within ‘Ireland’. With this in mind, www.GoMobile.ie are proposing to organise a 1 day ‘Introduction to IDIS’ training session. It is hoped that attendees will find the session both informative and productive. If you would like to attend, please contact Tasc Software.
The proposed agenda for the training session, looks as follows:
Brief Recycling Background ...
The composition of a typical car has changed substantially in recent years. For example, ferrous metal content has decreased significantly as lighter, more fuel-efficient materials such as plastics are incorporated into vehicle design. An analysis of vehicle manufacturer data for around seventy popular 1998 car models shows the following breakdown of materials (by weight).

Over 50 million tyres (just over 480,000 tonnes) were scrapped in the UK in 2001 and around 80,000 tonnes was disposed of in landfill.
Tyres consist mainly of steel, rubber compound and textiles (often in the form of cotton).
